Another Council Tax Scam - Beware Telephone Fraudsters!
By ALewisGrey | Saturday, December 11, 2010, 14:37
Wealden have published this press release via their website. Is this the only action they have taken? I only found it when I was looking for other information. Basic knowledge of the wider world and the learned cynicism required to get by nowadays surely means that most people wouldn't fall for it. But there are vulnerable and naive people around and these scammers are quite accomplished. The people who most need the information are unlikely to be surfing wealden's website.

'Please beware of a telephone scam which claims to offer a council tax refund - but only if the resident first makes a payment of £95 to a Western Union bank account. Residents are also asked for their full bank details.
One resident was offered a £7,000 "refund" on receipt of the £95 "payment".
In a further twist, the recipient of the call was told that if anyone else is informed about the "offer" there would be a £65 deduction from the refund!
Please contact Wealden's Council Tax Service on 01323 443385 if you receive any suspicious calls. Never give your bank account details to callers who have not properly identified themselves.
Sussex Police have been informed.'
Have you heard anything about it from other sources?
