My advice would be to avoid Jarvis Brook which isnt part of Crowborough anyway despite what the Estate Agents think and avoid the Alderbrook
area.Most other areas are good.

Contrary to CaptnSwing, Jarvis Brook is part of Crowborough - it's a little village contained within the town. There is a certain estate in Jarvis Brook, that might not have the best reputation, but the village itself is fine, and home to some beautiful properties, as well as the Crowborough Country Park.
Tollwood Park is just up the hill from Jarvis Brook, on an estate known as Montargis. The estate, whilst looking a bit like Lego, is really quite pretty, and close to both the town and railway station.
Jarvis Brook is a separate village which has now been subsumed by Crowborough in the same way High Brooms has been subsumed by Tunbridge Wells.
Jimbobba is stretching it a bit to say Tollwood Park/Montargis is any way associated with Jarvis Brook.Tollwood/Montargis is in Crowborough stretching from Crowborough Hill up to Chapel Green which is really the heart of the town. You wont go wrong buying in this area even if it is a bit 1980s identikit.

Crowborough's great wherever you look. Yes the Jarvis Brook area has had it's knocks over the years but the residents association is doing great things down there. They've organised community cleanups and fun days that local residents actually participated in and somehow have managed to create a feeling of pride in the residents. You can't go wrong with Tollwood Park. It's within walking distance (just) of the town as well as train station (though it's uphill on the way back).
What made you move to Crowborough and where are you moving from?

Ok, lets put it this way, if you go into the coutry park Jarvis Brook end, and walk through (a short distance) you come out on part of Montargis. Distance wise, Montargis is under 1 mile from Jarvis Brook, around a 2 minute drive, literally just up the hill. Hence the point if being ideal for the railway station located in Jarvis Brook. On a history note, our station used to be called Crowborough & Jarvis Brook, now with Jarvis Brook as part of Crowborough, its simply now called 'Crowborough Station)
CaptnSwing is quite right, Jarvis Brook is a village which has now been subsumed by Crowborough which in simple terms, means Jarvis Brook is now included in Crowborough - part of.
Good luck with your house hunting!
Historically Jarvis Brook and Crowborough were outlying parts of the Parish of Rotherfield. Most of what is Crowborough today was just fields and Jarvis Brook was just that a Brook. What we call Crowborough Cross was just a stopping off point from London to Lewes and by all accounts was a lawless place especially the Pub / Inn (nothing changes).
Crowborough began to grow during the 19th Century when the area became known as The Scotland of the South and people arrived by the new fangled train.
History lesson over good luck with your house hunting and I would advise you to avoid Western Road Jarvis Brook unless you have good contacts in the motor spares industry who can provide a never ending supply of car mirrors.!!!"
Parked cars plus lorries/buses =expense.

ReportHow illuminating! I like to think I know a thing or six about Crowborough, but as they say 'you learn a new thing every day'. There was a rumour that Captain Birdseye once lived in Crowborough - can anyone corroborate this? David Jason, the bloke who is Phill Mitchell, Simon Gallup (of the Cure), Rebekkah Wade (editor of The Sun) and Kym from 'How Clean is Your House' have also either lived here previously or still do. And let's not forget Lisa-Marie moving in just down the road in Rotherfield.... Don't know why this is relevant at all but I must shamefully admit I find the vacuous world of celebrity diverting, and when that world includes Crowborough it's almost like all my Christmases have come at once. For about 30 seconds. Then I remember I've left the grill on/left the kids behind at the shops/left my sanity far behind and then get back to reality.

Just back to the question - Tollwood Park is not a bad area, it has some smaller housing which means there are several starter homes in the mix. It depends on what style housing/build year youre looking for. There's some great older properties around too - I would say places to avoid would be the obvious i.e. immediately near schools, on the A26 or near the nightlife pub.. Not for business reasons, but I suggest popping in to the cafe for some local knowledge.

ReportYes, welcome back.. I wouldn't put it past those who shall remain nameless to have had you bumped off! Honestly, some people! Anyway, you coming to Cruddle on Thursday 2 at the Wheatsheef, 8.00 pm? I'm deffo going and gforce4678, if you are in the area, it's another way to get to know what's what in the town and meet some friendly locals so do come too if you can.
By ALewisGrey at 11:28 on 27/05/11
ReportYes thats correct Jarvis brook is at the bottom of Crowborough Hill where the train station is.

ReportRe Cruddle, I think one simply pitches up at the Wheatsheaf at 8pm and hangs about until other Cruddlers turn up. No special handshake as far as I'm aware. If you're on twitter follow #putcrowboroughonthemap. What do you think would help the infighting and propaganda amongst certain retailers in Crowborough?

Shan't challenge the knowledge (or lack of) of history and geography but didn't see Allan or Annabel at Cruddle.
I think it matters less where you live in Crowborough than what you get involved in. It's a great community and there's always something going on and the people are great. Just don't listen to the whingers.

Crowborough town is at the top of the hill and Jarvis Brook is at the bottom of the hill near the station and tip unless you can prove otherwise.
The original poster wants to move to Crowborough and I think its very unfair to
portray Jarvis Brook as some sort of paradise on earth when he stated quite clearly that he was looking at the Tollgate/Montargis area.
If you are going to offer advice however well meaning you could actually get the
basic geography and history of the town straight in your own mind before offering it up to others.
