Crowborough Council Issues Heatwave Warning

Wealden District Council have issued a warning of a 'level 2 heatwave' for Crowborough over the next few days, which means that temperatures will reach a level which can pose a significant risk to health.  Makes a nice change, seeing as Crowborough always seems to be at least 2 degrees colder than anywhere else!

However, heatstroke is no laughing matter if you've ever experienced it.  There are a few basic rules to abide by, which to most seem like common sense but there are still some people without a clue - as we saw a couple of weeks ago with the horrendously burnt baby on Eastbourne beach.  The other thing that baffles me is why people (particularly men) reckon there's no point putting on sun cream in the UK, but get them on holiday at the same temperature and they'll happily lather on the lotion.

Here are the NHS tips on avoiding Heatstroke:

High temperatures can be dangerous, especially for:

  • the elderly

  • the very young

  • people with chronic or long-term medical conditions

In a level two alert, you don’t need to take immediate action. If the level of alert is raised, more information will be issued (see Heatwave: level three alert).

Be prepared in case the weather stays hot:

  • Stay tuned to the weather forecast on the TV or radio.

  • If you’re planning to travel, check the forecast at your destination too.

  • Plan ahead: stock up with supplies so that you don't need to go out during extreme heat and think about what medicines, food and non-alcoholic drinks you'll need.

  • Keep plenty of water to hand and stay in the shade whenever possible.

  • Identify the coolest room in the house, so you can go there to keep cool.

Remember:

  • Enjoy the weather but try to stay cool.

  • Don't go outside between 11am and 3pm as this is the hottest part of the day.

  • Spend time in the shade and avoid strenuous activity.

  • Help others: check up on neighbours, relatives and friends who may be less able to look after themselves (for example, if they have mobility problems).

  • Drink water or fruit juice regularly.

  • Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, and if you do drink alcohol make sure you have lots of water or other non-alcoholic drinks as well.

  • Keep rooms cool by using shade or reflective material external to the glass, or if that is not possible, by closing light-coloured curtains (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).

  • Keep the windows closed while the room is cooler than it is outside and, if it's safe, open windows at night when the air is cooler.

  • People with heart problems, breathing difficulties or serious illnesses may find their symptoms become worse in hot weather, so make sure you have enough medicines in stock and take extra care to keep cool.

Heat exhaustion can happen to anyone in hot weather and if it isn't treated it can lead to heatstroke, which can be dangerous and even fatal.

If you or anyone else feels unwell, drink water and go somewhere cool to rest. If symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, dizziness, weakness or cramps get worse or don't go away, seek medical help. Find out more about heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Oh please come off it.Compared to many parts of the world a Wealden Level 2 heatwave would be considered a cool day.
People travel on holiday and experience temperatures far in excess of what we are experiencing now and come home in one piece.
This is just the nanny state at its worst.People generally are intelligent enough to judge what actions to take on a warm summers day and dont need such idiotic advice from a council numpty as "Don't go outside between 11am and 3pm" or " Drink water or fruit juice regularly".
We are adults and I dare say if we had chest pains or breathlessness we would seek medical attention whether it was +30 or -30 outside.

As for drinking lots of fruit jiuce that is just crazy advice because that is likely to result in the "runs" which will cause dehydration faster than the odd beer or two on a hot day.

Just ignore this advice and enjoy the weather because this rubbish comes from the same people who said we are all going to die of bird flu/pig flu/sars/global warming etc etc.If you want to go for a drive crank up the a/c and go for a drive ,if you want to drink alcohol then drink alcohol,if you want to mow your lawn at 1.30 then mow your lawn. Its your life and your choices so dont let some clown tell you what to do.
Hasnt Wealden Council got anything better to do that to tell us that the weather is going to be hot in summer .

I am so stupid I cant think for myself so I must ring Wealden up and ask if its ok to get up tomorrow or should I just stay put and wait for the heat/bird flu/pig flu/sars to get me.
